Construction project managers are critical to the success of pretty much every construction project.  They make sure that the project is completed on time, within budget, and satisfying all specifications.  It’s true that construction managers are valuable assets to the organizations they work for. There are many routes to becoming a construction manager there’s on the job training and then getting a formal education.  Of course, we are going to focus on helping students that are looking to get an education to launch their career.

5 Steps to Starting Your Construction Management Program

  1. The first step is to determine whether you need an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in construction management.  If you are already employed in construction and have some experience running projects or monitoring the quality of work of others, then you may be able to get your employer to sponsor you and likely only need to pursue an associate’s degree. If you have no or very little experience in construction, it will be easier for you to find employment if you obtain your bachelor’s degree.
  2. The next step is to determine whether you want to go to a campus-based college or an online college.  Both types of institutions are equally well respected in the field so it really becomes a matter of how flexible your schedule is.  If you need to be able to complete your degree while you attend college, you will find online degree programs to be your best choice.
  3. Once you decide the type of degree and whether you want to go to an online college, you then need to begin searching for the best school.  You should consider things like the school’s graduation rate, number of students, and of course the cost of tuition.  You can use our degree finder above to make searching for the right school a lot easier.
  4. The next thing to consider is the cost relative to the salary that you can expect when you complete your degree.  The average salary for a construction manager is $110,000/year with bonuses and benefits it is around $140,000/year.  Starting salaries are between $75,000 and $95,000/year.  In any event, you should easily be able to afford to pay back your college tuition costs.
  5. Finally, once you complete your degree you will be eligible to sit for certification by the CMAA–Construction Management Association of America.  This is an excellent credential to add to your resume and will definitely allow you to demand a top salary.
